Rapid Redux has put unbeaten Australian superstar Black Caviar’s winning streak in the shade by racking up his 21st consecutive victory here on Tuesday.
In so doing he matched a modern-day US record for most victories by a horse in a calendar year with his 19th triumph of 2011, pushing his overall winning streak to 21 races in a row compared to Black Caviar’s 16.
The five-year-old gelding broke from the rail, led from the start and edged Awesome Rhythm by half-a-length at the finish line to win the 1-1/16th-mile (1700m) starter allowance race.
JD Acosta was the jockey as he has been for seven races in the winning streak.
Rapid Redux has won at seven different tracks with seven different riders during his record run.
Citation won 19 races in a row during his 1948 Triple Crown season to match the one-year US record from the start of the 20th Century set by Roseben in 1905.
Rapid Redux has not lost since November 18, 2010.
The winning streak began two weeks later at Penn National, where the horse was claimed by owner Robert Cole last year for $US6,250.
